The Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) has announced the appointment of Fr Atsu Dodzi Jean-Paul Savi, SJ, as the new Director of the Jesuit Historical Institute in Africa (JHIA).

Fr Savi succeeds Fr Jean-Luc Enyegue, SJ, who has recently been appointed Provincial of the West Africa Province (AOC). The appointment, made by the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Very Rev. José Minaku, SJ, takes effect at the beginning of August 2026. Fr Savi will be based at Hekima University College in Nairobi, Kenya.

Fr Savi brings exceptional academic credentials and experience to his new role. He holds two doctoral degrees: one in Contemporary History from Université Lumière Lyon II (France), obtained in September 2023, and another in Church History from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, completed in May 2023.

His academic excellence has been internationally recognized. In November 2024, he was awarded the prestigious Bellarmine Prize by the Pontifical Gregorian University in recognition of outstanding scholarly achievement and contribution to research.

Beyond his academic accomplishments, Fr Savi has demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching, research, and archival work. He has authored numerous publications and contributed to conferences focusing on the history of Christianity in Africa. His expertise positions him well to advance the mission of JHIA in preserving and promoting Jesuit heritage on the continent.

Fr Minaku expressed confidence in the appointment, noting that Fr Savi possesses the qualities necessary to lead the Institute with discernment, vision, and effectiveness.

This transition also provides an opportunity to express gratitude to the outgoing Director, Fr Jean-Luc Enyegue, SJ. During his tenure, the Institute experienced notable growth in academic output and institutional presence.

His leadership strengthened the visibility of Jesuit historical scholarship in Africa and contributed significantly to the publication of high-quality research.

Fr Minaku extended appreciation on behalf of the Conference:
“We thank Fr Jean-Luc Enyegue for his dedicated service and his continued commitment to the mission in his new role as Provincial.”

As Fr Savi assumes his new responsibilities, the Jesuit community entrusts his leadership to God’s guidance, with hope for continued growth and impact in the work of the Institute.
