The Jesuit Historical Institute in Africa (JHIA) is pleased to announce the 2nd Edition of a significant scholarly work by Fr Joseph Afulo Oduor, SJ, originally published in the 2022 JHIA publication.
The edition critically examines the evolving landscape of higher education governance and policy in East Africa, offering both analytical depth and practical insight. It underscores the enduring relevance of Fr Afulo’s scholarship and its lasting contribution to discourse on education, leadership, and policy in Africa.
This publication coincides with an important milestone in Fr Afulo’s academic and pastoral journey. He has recently been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Arrupe Jesuit University, effective 29 May 2026. The appointment was announced by José Minaku, President of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), who commended Fr Afulo’s depth of experience, visionary leadership, and steadfast commitment to the Jesuit educational apostolate.
Fr Afulo holds a PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership from Marquette University. He has previously served as Principal of Hekima University College and as Provincial Superior of the Jesuit Province of Eastern Africa. His academic work remains deeply rooted in the realities and challenges confronting higher education institutions across the region.
This 2nd Edition complements his growing body of scholarship, under the Exploring Higher Education in Africa Series, which includes:
- Challenges Facing Higher Education in East Africa
- Trends of Higher Education Policy in East Africa: How Policies Affect Higher Education in East African Countries
- Purpose of Education: Principles, Policies, and Practices
In recognition of its scholarly value and contemporary relevance, the book will be featured during the upcoming Hekima Research Week, offering a platform for academic engagement and dialogue.
