Gratitude to the Outgoing Rector

RWEZAURA Mutayoba Deogratias, SJ

Fr. Deogratias Mutayoba Rwezaura, SJ, was appointed as Rector of Hekima College Jesuit Community by Fr. General, Arturo Sosa, SJ. He assumed the office at the end of the mandate of his predecessor, a position he has held since 19 Nov 2017.

Fr. Rwezaura is a member of the Society of Jesus Eastern Africa Province (AOR); he joined the Society in 1994 and was ordained as a priest in 2005. He worked as a Regional Director for the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Eastern Africa and served as Socius in the Provincial Curia of AOR province since 2015. Currently, in addition to being the rector of the Jesuit community, he also serves as the President of the Faculty of Theology of the Jesuits of Africa and Madagascar (FTJM) and a faculty member in the  Jesuit School of Theology at Hekima University College, where he teaches Catholic Social Teaching, Forced Migration: Refugees and Human Trafficking among other courses.

He has written several book chapters and contributed to peer and non-peer-reviewed journal articles. Examples of this works are “Understanding Veritalis Gaudium in Light of Evangelii Gaudium (2020).”, “Poverty, Suffering and Graced Solidarity (2021).” “Sowing Seeds of Hope: Radio Kwizera, A Decade of Service to Refugees in Tanzania.” Points of View no. 27 (June 2004): 22-33.

Fr. Rwezaura leaves the Hekima Jesuit Community during the College’s peak reform era, known as HUC@40. As a member of Hekima College’s board of trustees, he has played a key role in some of the major improvements, such as the recently launched solarization project and many others, which have resulted in significant academic and physical infrastructural achievements for both the college and the community. The motivational motto is “From Better to Best”.
