The March 2026 edition of the JHIA Newsletter arrives at a sacred threshold, the beginning of Lent, a season that invites the Church into deeper reflection, conversion, and renewed service.

This issue brings together voices that embody precisely this movement of grace.

At the heart of our newsletter is the ordination of twenty-three new deacons at Hekima University College, a celebration situated on the eve of Lent, reminding us that vocation is not a private achievement but an ecclesial gift. Their ordination stands as a sign of hope for the Church in Africa and beyond, where formation, mission, and generous response continue to flourish.

Alongside this ecclesial milestone, we are privileged to feature two deeply personal reflections. Deacon Ronald Odhiambo Owiyo traces his Jesuit journey from village parish life to international formation and apostolic service. Bonosa Kwadwo Fosu, SJ offers a contemplative meditation on vocation, a story not of dramatic interruption, but of grace that patiently persists until surrender becomes freedom.

These narratives echo a shared truth: vocation is rarely sudden. More often, it unfolds quietly, through accompaniment, fraternity, study, service, and the daily fidelity of prayer.

We also celebrate a significant scholarly contribution from Fr Joseph Afulo, SJ, whose second edition publication and recent appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Arrupe Jesuit University reflect the intellectual vitality of Jesuit higher education in Africa. Scholarship and service remain inseparable in our mission.

As we journey through Lent, may this issue remind us that every stage of formation is already mission. May we, too, listen attentively to the quiet invitations of grace in our own lives.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
