JHIA is a commitment of the Society of Jesus to preserving memory and promoting historical knowledge in Africa and its adjacent islands.

Our Vision

To provide a cost-effective environment for ground-breaking research on the religious histories, cultures and traditions of the people of Africa and Madagascar.

Our Mission

  1. to collect and preserve records on the religious traditions and cultures of Africa, including Islam,
  2. to document the evolution of Christianity on the continent, especially the role played in it by the Society of Jesus, other missionary societies and local agents of evangelization,
  3. to make the collected information available to researchers from all academic disciplines, and
  4. to promote targeted research.
