Jan-Georg Deutsch

Jan-Georg DeutschJan-Georg Deutsch (1956-2016) was Associate Professor in Commonwealth History and Fellow of St Cross College at the University of Oxford. At his passing, his colleagues at Oxford’s History Faculty described him as one who “played a major role in the development of African History within the History curriculum in Oxford. He was both a passionate and highly committed teacher, who recognized the importance of communicating the history of Africa to generations of undergraduate and postgraduate historians. He was much in demand as an engaged and charismatic tutor, and most especially as a dedicated supervisor of student theses.” Goerg (as he was fondly called by students and colleagues) bequeathed his entire Africana collection (over 1500 items) to the Jesuit Historical Institute in Africa. Prof. Jan-Georg Deutsch Collection is now preserved at the institute and is accessible for free to graduate students and researchers who visit its facilities. Click here to view the collection.
